That far into the war, and yet such incompetence exhibited by a corps commander, an army commander, and overall commander of Union troops at that time in the war, makes it numero uno blunder here.

He immediately screwed up the Atlanta Campaign, then went on a useless trip to Savannah and almost gave away part of the northern victory to Joe Johnston in Raleigh.

It ran up the Confederate casualty list- it killed many excellent generals- including Pat Cleburne, but it didn't mean anything if you really look at it. Hood could never have destroyed Thomas- his entire campaign was absolute folly and the height of stupidity, but Hooker is the winner here! As Meade urged at Chancellorsville- he should have kept after Lee- they had the ANV ready to be crushed, but Hooker lost his nerve. THAT battle mattered- THAT battle could have ended the war in 1863. |

2. McClellan doing NOTHING after Malvern Hill when even James Longstreet said he could have chased the ANV back through Richmond.
3. McClellan alowing weeks to pass playing games outside Richmond while Davis sent Lee everything he could spare to build the ANV to it's greatest strength of the war.
4. Morgan going against the specific orders of Bragg and ruining thousands of badly needed cavalry running across Ohio in his vain attempt for further glory.
