All,
This past December 13th was the 145th anniversary of the Battle of Fredericksburg, perhaps one of the most one sided engagements ever participated in by the Army of Northern Virginia vs. the Army of the Potomac.
The slaughter, on the side of the Army of the Potomac, was indeed (and truly!) horrific, especially in the assaults against that part of the lines occupied by components of Longstreet's First Corps and o'erswept by the First Corps Artillery under field command of E. Porter Alexander, who resisted attempts by General Lee to move his guns to the military crests of Telegraph Hill, Marye's Hieghts and Willis's Hill.
I wonder if, given the comparatively "easy" victory of the ANVa over its opponent, this particular battle contributed in many ways to the successes and failures of the next two major engagements fought by the ANVa...namely Chancellorsville and Gettysburg?
Thoughts, anyone? _________________ Your Humble Servant,

Gerry,
I for one believe so...............
I have wondered if this was the setup for Gettysburg?
The interesting thing is my cousin was plowing through her moms things.
And she found a letter from one John Dougherty... 30 NJV Reg I...
He wrote they had just finished this horrible march in the mud and rain.. And says how the army is "whipped", and will never ever Beat Bobby Lee!!!!
A lot more to it.. But interesting huh?

BTW just finished reading Gottfried's book on First NJ Brigade...a very good one. _________________ Your Humble Servant,

I assume they still do the candlelight vigil there.
"Old" Fredericksburg is a great town. I'd love to see it around the Christmas holiday.
I'm planning on going back there next year for the third time.
At least once in my life I'd like to visit Spotsylvania and the Wilderness on a bright, sunny day. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it."

SURE! Longstreet sees that these frontal assaults are as fruitless as can be and Marse Rob't (one the other hand) desides to act like a stubborn mule (but in horse's harness)
Seriously - IMHO, I don't see it as a set up for Gettysburg; if you want to get a bit more technical - I guess Chancellorsville would claim that 'dubious' Honor if it's a toss between these two.
If anything, Lee completely reversed F-burg in G-burg and placed ANV in about the same predicament that Burnsie placed AoP - fighting uphill and over open ground.
There is a REASON why the Union Soldiers by the wall were yelling 'Fredericksburg!' during PPT _________________ I Remain

For all who keep track.... tomorrow is the 146th Anniversary of the Battle of Fredericksburg.
I have been re reading the Memoirs of G. Moxley Sorrel and would entertain posting some of his comments about Fredericksburg here, over the next couple days, if there is interest. _________________ Your Humble Servant,

I find this battle to be extraordinarily interesting. It's one of my "favorites."
(And there's way too much talk about that other 'burg.)
What I would really like to see are some photographs from this time of year. Almost all the ones I've seen were taken during warm weather days, like all of the ones I own. It'd be nice to see some taken during the winter months when the battle was actually fought. _________________ "Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it."

If you ever get a chance to tour the field with Flyer Fan Frank O'Reilly, jump on it. He is THE expert on the Frederickburg fighting!
