In David Martins "Gettysburg July-1st" there is a reference to company-A, 1st Md cavlary batt. (CSA) capturing three errant union artillerymen North of Gettysburg on the evening of June 30th. It seems the artillerymen asked for permission to visit their homes and when denied mounted horses and started out anyway. They went before Ewell and supposedly this was his first information on the position of the AOP. All I can figure is these artillerymen had to come from Calefs battery-A, 2nd U.S. which was with Buford. Apparently on June 30th at least Ewell was using what cavalry was available to him as it should have been. The complete article can be found on page 212.

You're referring to Harry Gilmor's battalion, which was used to do provost duty. Gilmor, in fact, was briefly the provost marshal for the town of Gettysburg, so it makes sense that these men would have been rounding up and guarding prisoners.

What struck me was if on June 30th the 1st Maryland batt. is being used for scouting why did Ewell seem to forget about this asset on July 1st? Gilmor and his men would have been far more suited to respond to the report of union troops than Gordon and Smiths brigades. _________________ "We have come to stay" Stones brigade on July 1st 1863.
