I'm looking for a good book (or books) on the workings of the Confederate government -- how it financed and managed the War, how positions were filled, how it provided public services, etc. Any recommendations would be welcomed!

Thanks for your help.

The Rise and Fall of Confederate Government by His Excellency the Honorable President Jefferson F. Davis

I might also suggest a book by William Davis -- "Look Away: A History of the Confederate States of America."

Modern politics are boring -- absolutely.

But 19th-century US politics are fascinating (to me, anyway).

As a second and third to that... you might also wish to look at the diaries of J B Jones, "A Rebel War Clerk's Diary". Interesting stuff about some of the workings of the CS Government. IF you take Jones with a slight grain of salt, if even half of what he writes actually happened, there were wheels within wheels going on there. No wonder Davis oft times despaired of the Confederate States succeeding in winning their independence.

I'm currently reading Statesmen of the Lost Cause by Hendrick which I'm finding informative since I know very little about those included other than Davis. It was written in 1939.

Confederate Supply is another that I read some time ago. I believe that it is pretty well thought of on the subject of supplying the CSA .

Hello....

Not really hard to read and an excellent source of material - closer to the
time than most books on this subject. Pre - war and the second volume
deals with the history following Lincolns death. Amazing read ...amazing
source of facts...not opinions!!!!

20 Years of Congress

James G Blaine
2 volumes
published : 1884

I picked up both books in an antique store in Maine for $20.00. :smt003
